Digital Citizenship Curriculum training

Suriname currently lacks a formal ICT curriculum for secondary education. As an ICT teacher, I decided not to start from scratch and began exploring available resources to facilitate my teaching.

My search led me to commonsense.org, a platform offering comprehensive Digital Citizenship curricula spanning all grade levels (K-12). The best part? They generously provide ready-to-use lesson plans at no cost. These lesson plans are thoughtfully categorized by grade levels, units, and topics for easy access.

To acquaint myself with this valuable resource, I took a free one-hour tutorial designed for grades 6-8. While there was a slight discrepancy in time allocation (with their lesson plans based on 45-minute sessions while we have 40-minute lessons here), we can successfully integrate the Digital Citizenship Curriculum into our school's various grade levels.

Creating a "TIMES TABLE" game using SCRATCH

To further develop my programming skills I tried this project on the  Raspberry Projects site
using SCRATCH.

It's a math game to practice "times tables" from 2 to 12.
  • When the games is started, it randomly picks to numbers between 2 and 12.
  • It asks for the answer if they were multiplied together.
  • After entering the answers, it verifies the answer and displays if correct or not.

Practicing using these tutorials is important. It helps to develop knowledge and skills to become better teachers. These type of games are also very useful to practice math ( "gamification").

ICT in Education C1-Y2 progress

Year 2 of ICT in Education was another excellent year. We did some observations in classes and other great activities with students.

Observations

As part of the course we went to other schools to do observations. We were checking for how lessons were prepared and taught, if technology was used and how it could be enhanced.

I was a great experience to be back in class and get a glimpse of how it could be later as a teacher. With all the things we'learned during the two years, it was obvious that education can really be improved.
